Early Childhood Evaluation: Ages 3-5

If your preschool-aged child is experiencing delays in speech, learning, behavior, or motor development, an early childhood evaluation can provide the insight and support needed to help them thrive. At Insight IQ, we specialize in developmental and academic testing for children ages 3 to 5, offering a warm, play-based approach that makes the process comfortable for both child and parent.

Why Young Children Are Referred for Testing

Parents or pediatricians may seek an early childhood evaluation if a child:

  • Is not speaking or using language as expected
  • Struggles with following directions or expressing needs
  • Shows difficulty with attention, play skills, or peer interaction
  • Demonstrates delays in fine or gross motor development
  • Is not learning concepts like colors, shapes, numbers, or letters as expected
  • Has had a previous diagnosis (e.g., autism, speech delay, developmental delay) and needs updated testing for services

Even at a young age, testing can help identify whether delays are developmental in nature, part of a learning profile, or simply areas that need targeted support.

What the Process Looks Like

Evaluations for this age group are designed to feel like structured play. Our early childhood specialists use standardized tools, interactive tasks, and observations to assess:

  • Cognitive Development (reasoning, memory, early problem-solving)
  • Language Skills (understanding and using words, expressive communication)
  • Pre-Academic Skills (early math and literacy concepts)
  • Behavioral & Social-Emotional Functioning

Parents are often asked to complete developmental history forms and rating scales to help us understand how the child functions at home and in daily life.

Please Note: If the results of the initial evaluation suggest concerns in specific areas, such as speech and language, social-emotional or behavioral functioning, or fine and gross motor development, we may recommend formal testing in those domains. These additional assessments would incur separate costs and would only be conducted if deemed necessary based on initial findings.

What the Results Tell Us

Results highlight your child’s current developmental levels and identify:

  • Whether delays are present—and in which area
  • How your child’s skills compare to age-level expectations
  • Which types of support or services may help
  • Recommendations for preschool placement, therapy, or structured learning

We provide a detailed written report with clear language and actionable steps to help guide next decisions.
